4.2 Library as a Learning Resource

4.2.1 Library is automated with digital facilities using Integrated Library Management System (ILMS),  adequate subscriptions to e-resources and journals are made. The library is optimally used by the faculty and students.

Nalanda Library being the heart of an academic and learning system, located in a separate building is easily accessible by one and all. The mission of the library is to facilitate creation of new knowledge through acquisition, organization and dissemination of knowledge resources and value added services. It remains open from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm and maintains a core collection of 38150. The diversity of the library collection includes Textbook, Reference books, Journals, Back Volume of Journals, Project Reports and Thesis etc.

The MCU Library (Nalanda Library) has successfully embraced automation through the implementation of an Integrated Library Management System (ILMS) SOUL2.0 (From 2005) and then after used upgrade version SOUL3.0 from 2021. This technological integration marks a pivotal shift from traditional manual methods to a streamlined and efficient system, enhancing the overall management of library resources and services.

Library also implemented the Web OPAC facility for students and faculty of the university to access the library catalogue.Anyone can check anywhere, in mobile too. The implementation of the ILMS involves several key components aimed at improving various aspects of library operations. It carries out the execution of core areas of library operations such as:

  • Inventory management (Cataloguing, acquisition, indexing)
  • bar code of books, Journals, documents
  • Web- OPAC for searching library documents by the users
  • Membership creation
  • Circulation (check-in, check-out, reservation)
  • Report generation of library transactions
  • Library Administration

Besides issue, return/renewal of books, various services are provided to users such as reference, emailing and displaying new arrivals, content  dissemination through whatsapp group and access library catalogue, photocopy, printing and scanning facility etc.

The University library has adequate built-up space to provide services in different section like Circulation, Reference, periodical, Technical, Reading Room, Stack Area, Acquisition, e-library area, students reading room, faculty reading room etc.

The University library has become a member of NDL through which user are availing e-access to digital contents. University Library is also a member of Shodhganga, where all the PhD Thesis are Uploaded.
